South Carolina standout Rachel Glenn, an NCAA Division 1 indoor All-American and reigning Southeastern Conference champion in the women's outdoor high jump, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming the first true freshman to capture the title since 2012 and the first female athlete for the Gamecocks to secure the victory since Jeannelle Scheper in 2015. Glenn reflects on the intense battle at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas, involving her and Texas A&M athletes Tyra Gittens and Lamara Distin, with all three individuals clearing 6-2.25 (1.89m). Glenn and Distin had not missed prior to the deciding height, with Gittens missing multiple attempts at earlier heights. Distin cleared 6-2.25 on her third attempt, placing her in third after Glenn and Gittens both achieved clearances on their second opportunities, allowing the South Carolina talent to prevail on fewer misses at earlier heights. Glenn analyzes the depth of the SEC, also including senior Abby O'Donoghue of LSU and sophomore Anna Hall of Georgia, and the potential for the conference to take the top five places at the NCAA Division 1 Championships on June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She shares her respect for Gittens, who cleared 6-4.75 (1.95m) during the heptathlon competition, and what a challenge it was to prevail against her in the high jump final. Glenn revisits placing second to Gittens at the Division 1 indoor final in March in Fayetteville, Ark., with a 6-1.50 (1.87m) clearance, a significant improvement from placing fifth and clearing 5-10.75 (1.80m) at the same Randal Tyson Track Center facility in February for the SEC Indoor Championships. She expresses gratitude for her collaboration with South Carolina jumps coach Delethea Quarles, and explains her ambitions to challenge the NCAA freshman record of 6-4.25 (1.94m) achieved in 1991 by Arizona's Tanya Hughes, as well as the Gamecocks' all-time program mark of 6-5 (1.96m) produced by Scheper in 2015. Glenn also examines her improvement in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a personal-best 58.30 in April at the Pepsi Florida Relays, as well as her opportunities to compete on the 4x400 relay.
