Vanderbilt graduate student-athlete Beatrice Juskeviciute, the reigning Southeastern Conference women's heptathlon champion representing Lithuania and an All-American for both the Commodores and previously at Cornell, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 9-10 at the NCAA Division 1 Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Juskeviciute is one of two athletes returning from the 2019 heptathlon final in Austin, along with Florida's Sterling Lester. She revisits the challenges of completing the two-day schedule with the heat and humidity in Texas, and the lessons learned about hydration, rest and recovery. Juskeviciute, who boasts a personal-best 6,079 points, examines the significance of surpassing the 6,000-point barrier multiple times this season and how much she has improved since finishing 19th in the 2019 Division 1 championship meet. She expresses gratitude for the guidance, mentorship and support of Justin Byron, who has coached Juskeviciute at both Cornell and Vanderbilt, in addition to being thankful for her collaborations with the rest of the Commodores' coaching staff in Althea Thomas, Ashley Kovacs and Michael Porter. Juskeviciute shares how meaningful it was to earn All-America first-team honors in the indoor pentathlon March 10 at the Division 1 final in Albuquerque, along with how significant it is for her and teammate Jada Sims to be the first Vanderbilt athletes competing in the heptathlon at the NCAA championship meet since 2004. She speaks about how the 100-meter hurdles and javelin throw have evolved as strengths in her heptathlon schedule, along with her pride in becoming a 6-meter long jumper and running consistently under 2:18 in the 800 meters. Juskeviciute explains her motivation to become only the second Vanderbilt female athlete to capture a Division 1 outdoor title, joining Ryan Tolbert in the 400-meter hurdles in 1997, along with joining Lithuanian record holder Austra Skujyte as an NCAA heptathlon champion from her back-to-back victories in 2001-02 in Kansas State. She also speaks about the depth of the heptathlon field in Austin, including USC's Allie Jones, Washington's Ida Eikeng, Texas' Kristine Blazevica and indoor pentathlon champion Jadin O'Brien of Notre Dame.
